Good to be asked to participate to www.theshotineverforgot.com by John House. Photographers are asked to give an image to the project and some text explaining their choice. For me it was a simple one, the image above shot in Peru 2006 on my Mamiya 7 II. You can read my story here and see the other photographers here.
Working with the charity Change Grow Live has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. Helping people through substance misuse, the charity is at the forefront of getting people back in control of their lives. I spent a day in Birmingham shooting peer mentors and service users for the charities literature and website rebranding. Here is Paddy, one my favourites. We also made a case study film currently in edit and to be posted soon.
On 28th January 2017 my dear friend Stuart Hudson passed away. We met at school and had a beautiful friendship that lasted 29 years.
From Monday 5th Feb to Friday 9th Feb, I am donating 100% of my book 'All the things you are' sales to the charity @mindcharity . Feb 6th is Stuarts birthday and I am going to honour him by helping raise awareness and support for the charity that I know Stu would wholeheartedly encourage.
At the beginning of last year I had my self published book delivered & ready but found it difficult to celebrate any kind of launch after his passing. I pushed a launch back to March and decided on @thesociallondon Heavenly records music venue/bar in London. Chosen because of Stu’s passion & love for the band St Etienne. Thanks again to all who came and to Carl, Danny & Co. His friends & family are still processing the loss and there are events planned later this year and already a half Marathon has been accomplished by @niklodge to help raise awareness for Mind in memory of Stu. It’s a positive step in desperate times but we all hope that further awareness can prevent people spiralling into life threatening problems through mental health issues. We may not be aware if someone is suffering from a mental health problem or may not feel we can talk about one. I hope this small offering can help in some way to raise awareness. Although Stu never got a copy of the book we did discuss it and I know he shared its sentiment.

A few shots from a recent trip to Iceland. We spent a few days driving Snæfellsnes Peninsula visiting the sites that we could when the wind wasn't too strong. The snow held off until the last day before we made our way to the ION hotel on route to the golden Circle. Amazing country, I'm planning the next trip already. There are only 4 hours of daylight in December and the light was ever changing. I shot with my trusty Hasselblad 500c/m & CFV50c digital back. Shooting with this set up slows me down, I love it.
Long exposures at midnight with my Hasselblad 500C/M & CFV50c digital back. Beautiful mountains surround the campsite at Arolla. At an altitude of 1950 meters, the campsite is in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Recent commission with Cico Books for Wendy Ward (no relation!)
In 2015 I was asked to take part in the creation of the parkrun 10yr anniversary photo book. During this process I met brothers Gary & Steve Wimbledon from Fulham who were on a strict health plan to change their lives. Running had become a huge part of their lives and a year after the completion of the book I embarked on making a video with the brothers inspired by their determination to lose weight and their love of the phenomonen that is parkrun. The video has since inspired parkrun to build a new website called loveparkrun.com that challenges inactivity and uses the video to inspire.

Marie-Françoise is the wife of my late fathers best friend, a French man named Julien Le Meur. I'm named after Julien and have kept in touch with them both for the last 14 years. Living now in Moyrazes near Rodez in France, my wife and I visited them for a night on our return from a camping trip this year. Marie-Françoise has unfortunately had problems with her health for a few years due to a car accident and her career as an Opera Singer has been put on hold. I'd never heard her sing before until over breakfast she broke out into song mesmerising both of us as Julien carried on as normal. Shortly after we had to leave our friends and were about to say goodbye when I asked to take their picture. Marie-Françoise pulled up a chair in the front room and sat towards the light from the window which lit her up isolating her from the room detail behind. I didn't ask Marie-Françoise to compose herself the way she did or ask her to look to the window. Her dream, she told us during our visit is to sing again on stage. I like to think this is what she is thinking about as I shot my 3 frames before we left.

I'm very pleased to have two of the 'Con Club' series images shortlisted for the RPS International Print Exhibition 158. Nearly 5000 images submitted from 56 countries around the world and just over 400 selected for the shortlist by the selectors. I entered 2 images from my series that I've been shooting for the last 3 years. Both images take on a musical theme, the club hosts many nights and I'm interested in the diverse range of people and acts that play at the club. The images shortlisted are below. One from a Beatles cover band night where a small group of regulars were singing along at the opposite end of the function room to the band, the dance floor completely empty at the time. The elder members of the club are certainly not shy when it comes to getting up and dancing but this being early into the set, 'Love Me Do' as I recall, was about absorbing the atmosphere and easing into the night.
The other shot is from one of the 'Northern Soul' nights. A regular feature at the Con Club and one I have shot many times over the last few years. Ive met some great characters and great dancers and this shot was taken at the Christmas 2014 night. The young dancer is Paul Kelly, incredible to watch and I found myself fixed on him with my camera for a few frames throughout the night. That often happens when I photograph the soul nights, people stick out and I become transfixed on them. I like this one for its suggestive tones and his look of consideration for his next move. My next move is to get prints made up and delivered to the RPS judges for consideration into the 100 final prints to be exhibited.
